How to Invest

Open a New Account or Add to an Existing Account

 

You may open an account or add to an existing account directly with Northern Funds or through Northern Trust and certain other institutions. If you have any questions, call the Northern Funds Center at 800-595-9111.

 

Minimum Investments

  • Minimum initial investment: $2,500 ($500 for an IRA)
  • Automatic Investment Plan: minimum initial investment $250
  • Additional purchases: $50 minimum, except for reinvestments of distributions, which have no minimum
  • Exchanges: $2,500 minimum for new accounts, $1,000 minimum for exchanges between existing accounts

 


Invest directly with Northern Funds by:

Online through Private Passport

You can exchange shares from one Northern Fund for shares of another Northern Fund for accounts with identical registrations through Private Passport.

Exchange

You can exchange shares from one Northern Fund for shares of another Northern Fund for accounts with identical registrations. You can also transfer money from a Northern Trust account to a Northern Funds account through Private Passport if you have online privileges.

 

To open a new account:

  • If you have online privileges with your existing Northern Funds account, you can exchange to a new account through Private Passport.
  • To exchange to a new account by mail, call 800-595-9111 for instructions.
  • $2,500 minimum for new accounts opened by exchange.

 

To add to an existing account:

  • If you have telephone privileges on the account you are exchanging from, you can exchange to another existing account by calling 800-595-9111.
  • If you have online privileges on the Northern Funds account you are exchanging from, you can exchange to an existing account through Private Passport.
  • To exchange to an existing account by mail, call 800-595-9111 for instructions.
  • $1,000 minimum for exchanges between existing accounts.

Automatic Investment

You can establish an account with a minimum investment of $250, rather than $2,500, by establishing an Automatic Investment Plan of at least $50 per month.

If you discontinue participation in the Plan, the Funds reserve the right to redeem your account involuntarily, upon 30 days written notice, if the account's net asset value is $1,000 or less. Involuntary redemption will not be made if the value of shares in an account falls below the minimum amount solely because of a decline in the Fund's net asset value.

To open a new account:

  • Read the Prospectus carefully.
  • Complete and sign a New Account Application.
  • Enclose a check payable to Northern Funds.
  • If you are investing on behalf of a corporation or other entity, your New Account Application must be accompanied by a corporate resolution, certification or other evidence of authority.
  • Mail your check, corporate resolution if needed and completed New Account Application to:

  • Enclose your check made payable to Northern Funds, with the investment slip from your account statement, or
  • Indicate on your check or separate piece of paper your name, address and account number.

All checks must be payable in U.S. dollars and drawn on a bank located in the United States. Cash, traveler's checks, third-party checks and money orders are not accepted.

Payroll or Government Direct Deposit

You can have your payroll or government check, including Social Security checks, deposited directly into your Northern Funds account.

 

To open a new account:

  • You must first open a new account with the investment minimum before establishing payroll or government direct deposit. See the instructions for opening a new account by mail above.
  • Once your account has been established, follow the instructions for adding to an existing account by payroll or government direct deposit.

 

To add to an existing account:

  • Determine if your employer has direct deposit capabilities through the Automated Clearing House (ACH)
  • Have your employer (or the government for Social Security checks) send payments to:

Dividend/Capital Gain Reinvestment

You can have your dividend and capital gain distributions automatically reinvested in another Northern Fund.
